Gas Safety Tips

Gas appliances are a part of most peoples every day lives. Even if you don’t use a gas appliance to prepare your meal, it’s likely that you will use some form of gas in your home throughout the day. Here we will give you some tips on how you can stay safe while using gas in your home.

The best way that you can ensure that your gas appliances are working properly would be to have them checked regularly by your gas supplier, or by a registered installer. Below you can find a list of do’s and don’ts in order for you to keep a safe gas appliance in your home.

Do’s

  • Use your sense of smell, and your initiative.  If you smell gas, don’t shake it off.  Open your windows immediately to get some ventilation in your house and make sure all gas appliances are switched off, and avoid any lit flames (things such as cigarettes, matches, lighters etc)
  • Make sure the flame from your gas appliance is blue
  • Follow manufacturer guidelines when using gas appliances equipment
  • Have a working multipurpose fire extinguisher

Don’ts

  • Don’t let children near gas appliances by themself
  • Only use your gas appliance only for what it has been made to do.  For example, you have some guests round your house and they are cold.  You have no central heating so you decide to warm up your house with your oven.  Or you have some guests round who would like some tea.  Both your kettle and cooker are not working.  You decide to heat up the water in your oven (or microwave oven).  Both of these choices will be bad ideas, so under no circumstances should you improvise with your gas appliances.
  • Don’t install a gas appliance yourself, unless you have been trained to do so.
